Microsuction and irrigation.
It can be uncomfortable, painful, and hard to hear if your ear has become blocked. One of the major causes is a build-up of earwax, which risks leading to infection if not removed carefully.
What causes impacted earwax?
A build-up of earwax can happen if:
- wax has been pushed into your ear canal by cotton buds, hair clips or fingers
- your ear canals are hairy, narrow, or damaged in some way
- you wear earplugs, earbud headphones or hearing aids
- water gets into the ear while swimming or showing and causes wax to expand
- your ear canal is inflamed or infected (known as otitis externa or ‘Swimmer’s ear’)
How do you know if you have an earwax build up?
Symptoms of earwax build-up include:
- Hearing loss
- Earache, or a feeling that your ears are blocked
- Ringing or buzzing in your ears (tinnitus)
- Vertigo (feeling dizzy and sick)
- Cough (caused by hard wax pressing the vagus nerve)
These should disappear once we remove the earwax. If you’re unsure if you have wax in your ears, arrange an examination.
How we remove earwax?
The former works like a miniature vacuum cleaner, adapted to suck out problematic earwax, and is a quick, non-invasive procedure recommended by NICE (the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence).
Water irrigation, or ‘syringing’ as it is commonly known, gently flushes blocked wax from your ear canal and is a fast, pain-free method.
We can also use manual extraction, using specially designed tools to tease soft wax from the ear canal.
